4: Never lose touch with the people you used to be

One of my core personal philosophies centres around “making the best mistakes possible”, and it’s something I may talk about at length in a future newsletter issue. At its core, the aim is to avoid easily-made mistakes by learning from the experiences of others and striving to break new ground with every fresh failure. It’s about developing the body of collective human knowledge and passing our learnings on to others.

However, on reflection, this doesn’t just relate to what we can learn from others - it also points to what we can learn from ourselves. Our original motivations are far too easily forgotten, and every day more lessons we swore we’d never forget are consigned to the retrograde amnesia of the present tense.

I listen to a lot of podcast interviews featuring great titans of industry and ordinary people alike, and one of the questions I hear most often is some variation of “If you could go back and tell your past self one thing what would it be?”.

What makes me laugh is how often we trust the empirical wisdom of hindsight bias and accredit ourselves for any modicum of growth or success. We trust the man (or woman) in the time machine to deliver omniscient wisdom from the future. But how often do we pause to consider that our past selves might have something to teach our future selves, or have something to say about the people we’ve become, the decisions we’ve made and the company we keep?

What might your past self say about your commitment to go to the gym thrice a week that fell to the wayside faster than a politicians promises post-election? Would the fresh-faced 20-year-old former you be proud of the work-life balance you maintain? Would they be empathetic to the dreams you’ve given up on? Would they accept the excuses you’ve told yourself in the present?

Only you will know that. But sometimes looking back is as important as looking forward - think not only about the lessons you’ve learned, but remember your love, your hope, and your motivation. Consider how your moral compass has shifted, and how your character has developed to match your circumstances.

We should keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be - even if only to think “bloody hell, wasn’t I a roguish little scoundrel”.

Books I’ve read/seen/will impulsively buy and add to my “to read” shelf on Goodreads:

  1. A Wild Sheep Chase by Haruki Murakami - seen (and impulsively bought). I saw a lady on the train wholly absorbed in this book. I googled the synopsis and bought it immediately.
  2. Slouching Towards Bethlehem by Joan Didion - impulsively bought. It’s amazing.
  3. Freakonomics by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Debner - read. A book everyone should own, recommended only by virtue of how often I now quote Mr Levitt, from this source and from others.

Things I’m loving

Films and shows:

  • A film about a dysfunctional middle-aged man played by Adam Sandler won’t initially sound like anything novel - but Uncut Gems is a gritty drama. It’s entertaining and Sandler is convincing, but to me, this is just another infinity gem in Lakeith Stanfield’s gauntlet of dynamic performances. That’s about it.
  • I’d initially marked The Good Place this as one of those “weird shows” to avoid, but after an evening marinating in good wine and equal company I took a chance on the recommendations from Teju and Dami, both newsletter readers. It’s hilarious and I’m sorry for doubting your judgement.

Apps:

  • If you’re a fan of quantum physics and supporter of the many-worlds interpretation like me, there’s some fun to be had next time you have a trivial decision to make. Universe Splitter connects to a quantum device in a Swiss lab, which releases single photons into a partially-silvered mirror. Each photon will simultaneously bounce off the mirror and pass through it - but in separate universes.
    On that basis, the app will tell you which of the two universes you’re in, and therefore which action to take. Like the Myers Briggs test, I can love this while admitting that it sounds like astrology for nerds.

Misc:

You might have missed it but earlier this week was apparently the only day this year that a broom can stand on its own due to the gravitational pull of the moon… or something like that. If you don’t believe me check this thread:

JK - it went viral and plenty of people were bamboozled but it actually has nothing to do with the alignment of the stars. The centre of gravity on a broom is actually very low and rests directly over the bristles so as long as you balance it right, you can make a broom stand on its own on any day of the year. Go try it right now and send me a picture/tweet if your broom stands!

Resources

  • The Nuclear Family Was a Mistake is an incredibly introspective dissection of the family unit in modern-day America and far more thought-provoking than my initial impression anticipated. A further thought of my own is the impact globalisation may have on what is currently a largely Western phenomenon. I specifically recalled my time working at a law firm in Shanghai where secretaries, associates and partners habitually fellowshipped over communal lunch orders and returned to homes that often housed three or more generations. However that model, while still familiar in many rural and suburban cities across China, is fast eroding in larger metropolitan cities. Read the article for yourself and share your thoughts with me!
